Kashmir — the crown of India — offers landscapes so spectacular they feel almost unreal. Snow-capped peaks, emerald valleys, saffron fields, and the incomparable Dal Lake make it one of the world's great travel destinations. Here is everything you need to plan a trip.

Best Time to Visit

Summer (April–June): Ideal for most visitors. Temperatures 15–30°C in Srinagar. Flowers bloom, meadows are lush, and all roads are open. Peak season — book accommodation early.

Autumn (September–November): Arguably the most beautiful season. Chinar trees turn gold and red, crowds thin after peak season, and the light is extraordinary for photography.

Winter (December–February): Gulmarg transforms into one of Asia's best ski destinations. Dal Lake sometimes freezes. Cold (–10°C nights) but magical. Best for adventure travelers.

Essential Stops

Srinagar: Dal Lake, Mughal Gardens (Shalimar Bagh, Nishat Bagh), old city bazaars and a houseboat stay are essential. Budget houseboats from ₹1,500/night; heritage deluxe from ₹6,000.

Gulmarg: Asia's highest gondola ride at 13,400 feet. In summer, meadows filled with wildflowers. In winter, world-class skiing. Day trip from Srinagar or overnight stays available.

Pahalgam: The Valley of Shepherds. Starting point for the Amarnath Yatra. Baisaran meadow (mini-Switzerland) and Aru Valley are unmissable. Horse rides to inaccessible meadows from ₹500.

Sonamarg: Glacier country. Thajiwas Glacier is accessible by pony. The drive from Srinagar along the Sindh River is spectacular.

Budget Planning

Budget traveller: ₹2,500–₹3,500/day (budget guesthouse, local food, shared transport). Mid-range: ₹5,000–₹8,000/day. Luxury (houseboat or heritage hotel): ₹12,000–₹25,000/day. Srinagar to Gulmarg by taxi: ₹1,200–₹1,800 one way.

Getting There

Srinagar Airport (SXR) has direct flights from Delhi (1.5 hours), Mumbai (2.5 hours), Bangalore and other major cities. Book 2–3 weeks ahead in summer. Alternatively, the Vande Bharat train runs to Banihal, connecting to Srinagar by road through the Banihal tunnel.
