The National Mental Health Survey of India estimated that 197 million Indians live with a mental health condition. Yet only about 20% of those who need care ever receive it โ€” one of the largest treatment gaps in the world.

Why People Don't Seek Help

Stigma remains the primary barrier. Mental illness is still widely associated in Indian culture with weakness or moral failing. This prevents people from acknowledging their own struggles and from seeking professional support. Financial cost and the severe shortage of mental health professionals โ€” India has only 0.3 psychiatrists per 100,000 people โ€” make access further difficult.

What Is Getting Better

The National Tele Mental Health Programme has dramatically expanded digital access. Awareness has grown substantially among urban youth. Several states are training community health workers in mental health first aid.
