The Services Selection Board (SSB) is a 5-day assessment process used by the Indian Armed Forces to select officers. It is not an exam you can "crack" with coaching โ€” it is a personality assessment. The assessors are looking for Officer Like Qualities (OLQs).

The 15 OLQs Assessed

Effective Intelligence, Reasoning Ability, Organising Ability, Power of Expression, Social Adaptability, Cooperation, Sense of Responsibility, Initiative, Self-Confidence, Speed of Decision, Ability to Influence the Group, Liveliness, Determination, Courage, and Stamina.

Day 1 โ€” Screening (PPDT + OIR)

Officers Intelligence Rating (OIR): two verbal/non-verbal reasoning tests. Picture Perception and Discussion Test (PPDT): write a story about a hazy picture, then discuss it in a group. ~50% of candidates are screened out here. Focus on: writing a clear narrative, participating constructively in the group discussion without being aggressive.

Day 2 & 3 โ€” Psychology Tests

  • TAT (Thematic Apperception Test): 12 pictures, write a story for each in 4 minutes. Stories should show a positive, resourceful protagonist who faces challenges and succeeds through personal initiative.
  • WAT (Word Association Test): 60 words, 15 seconds each. Your first spontaneous response reflects your actual attitudes โ€” be genuine and positive.
  • SRT (Situation Reaction Test): 60 situations, 30 minutes. Respond as you naturally would โ€” assessors look for practical, social, confident responses.
  • SD (Self Description): What your parents, teachers, friends and you think about yourself. Be consistent with your interview answers.

Day 3 & 4 โ€” GTO (Group Testing Officer)

Group Discussion, Group Planning Exercise, Progressive Group Task, Half Group Task, Individual Obstacles, Final Group Task, and Lecturette. The GTO observes how you function in a group โ€” not who talks most, but who adds value.

Day 4 โ€” Personal Interview

60โ€“90 minute interview. Know your PIQ (Personal Information Questionnaire) thoroughly. Be honest about your background, motivations, and awareness of current affairs. The interviewer is checking consistency and authenticity.

Day 5 โ€” Conference & Result

All three assessors (Psychologist, GTO, Interviewing Officer) confer. Recommended candidates are announced. Medical follows for recommended candidates.
