UPSC Civil Services is India's most prestigious and competitive examination. Roughly 1 million candidates apply each year for approximately 1,000 final selections. The examination has three stages: Preliminary (objective), Mains (written), and Personality Test (Interview).
Stage 1: Prelims โ GS Paper I & CSAT
Prelims consists of two papers โ General Studies I (100 questions, 200 marks) and CSAT (80 questions, 200 marks, qualifying at 33%). GS Paper I covers History, Geography, Polity, Economy, Environment, Science & Technology and Current Affairs.

Stage 2: Mains โ 9 Papers
Mains has 9 papers: 2 qualifying (Essay, and one language paper), plus 7 merit papers โ General Studies I, II, III, IV (Ethics), and 2 Optional subject papers. The essay paper (250 marks) is increasingly important.
Stage 3: Personality Test (Interview)
275 marks. Tests intellectual curiosity, balanced judgment, leadership, communication and awareness of current affairs. Mock interview practice with experienced panellists is essential.
Realistic Time Plan
For a fresh graduate starting now: 12โ15 months minimum. 8โ10 hours daily study. NCERT foundation (2 months) โ Standard references (4 months) โ Current affairs integration (ongoing) โ Mock tests (final 3 months).
